Resources · Emotions & Regulation
Your feelings don’t have to disappear before you can understand them.
Sometimes a feeling arrives loudly. Sometimes it barely has words.
You might snap, shut down, cry, go numb, get restless, overexplain, or feel completely overwhelmed.
It is easy to make regulation mean getting the reaction to stop.
These tools start somewhere else: notice what is happening, get curious about what your House may Need, and experiment with Care.

What Does My Smoke Look Like?
Before trying to change the feeling, notice how your House is showing you that something needs attention.
Smoke can show up in your body, your feelings, your thoughts, or what you do.
A tight chest. A hot face. Going blank. Replaying. Snapping. Getting busy. Going quiet. Checking on everyone. Feeling done.
The same Smoke Signal can carry different Messages. Different Brains can create similar Smoke.
The first job is not to explain it. Start with what you can actually see.

What Kind of Need?
The same Smoke can point toward very different Needs.
Maybe you cannot focus because you have not eaten. Because the instructions are unclear. Because the room is too loud. Because something hurt earlier. Because you do not want to do it alone.
Physical. Mental. Sensory. Emotional. Connection.
These are lenses, not boxes.
You can Need more than one thing, and the same Brain can point toward different Needs on different days.
A lens helps you look. It doesn’t put the Need in a box.

Experiment With Care
What Helps My House?
Once you have a possible Need, Care gives you something to try.
Not the perfect intervention. Not the thing that should work every time.
An experiment.
Maybe Care looks like food, rest, clearer information, fewer decisions, less noise, movement, room to feel, reassurance, honesty, help, or space within connection.
Then you notice what happened.
What changed, even a little? What did not change? What did you learn about your House?
Care responds to a Need. It does not have to erase a reaction to be useful.
TRY SOME CARE →What You May Be Noticing
Regulation is not the same thing as making yourself stop feeling.
A feeling can still be here while you understand more of what is happening.
A Brain can still be at the door while you offer the House Care.
A reaction can happen before Choice.
Sometimes Care creates more room. Sometimes it does not. Sometimes the Need changes once you have more information.
The goal is not a perfectly calm House. The goal is a House you can know and respond to.
The Question Before the Question
How much does my House have left?
Olive notices capacity.
Sleep. Food and water. Physical energy. Mental load. Decisions. Sensory input. Emotional load. Sustained effort. Downtime. Support.
When Olive is running low, another Brain may reach the door faster.
That does not make the reaction fake or meaningless.
It means capacity belongs in the context before asking the House for more.
Lower the bar today. That is not giving up. That is accurate.

When Your House Keeps Getting Overwhelmed
You don’t have to force yourself into calm.
Sometimes noticing the Smoke, Need, Care, and capacity gives you enough information to meet the moment differently.
And sometimes emotions keep arriving with an intensity, frequency, or pattern that you want help understanding.
Therapy can be a place to slow those moments down, understand what your House may be responding to, and build more room for Care and Choice.
