Resources · Self-Esteem & Identity
Some of the things you call “who I am” may be things your House learned to do.
Maybe you have words for yourself already.
Too much. Too sensitive. Lazy. Controlling. Anxious. Difficult. Needy. Not enough.
Sometimes those words feel so familiar that they stop sounding like descriptions and start sounding like identity.
These tools help you look again.
Not to replace one label with a nicer one—but to notice the patterns, Messages, and experiences that may be shaping how you see yourself.

Easy to Miss
Sometimes a Brain does not look the way you expect.
Ruby can look like control. Clover can look like perfectionism. Violet can look like not trying. Aqua can look like being easygoing. Olive can look like suddenly not caring.
From the outside, a pattern can get reduced to a label very quickly.
This resource asks you to slow that down and notice what is actually happening in your House.
A Brain is a pattern that may show up. It is not who you are.

Message or Wallpaper?
Not every sentence inside your House is doing the same job.
A Message is about this moment.
Wallpaper is what your House has learned to expect.
“I don’t feel heard” is different from “Nobody cares what I think.”
“I’m afraid they’re upset with me” is different from “People leave when they’re upset with me.”
One points toward what may be happening now.
The other may be an older expectation already hanging on the walls.
The Message right now and the Wallpaper underneath it are not always the same thing.

Bricks
A Brick is an experience that taught your House something.
One moment does not always build a belief.
But experiences can repeat, stack, and begin to shape what your House expects.
This worksheet helps you notice what happened and what your House may have learned from it—without requiring you to dig for a single origin story.
Bricks are what happened.
Wallpaper is what your House learned from them.
Notice. Don’t dig. You can stop and return later.
NOTICE THE BRICKS →What You May Be Noticing
A pattern can feel personal without being the whole person.
When something has happened for a long time, it can be hard to tell the difference between:
“This is what my House learned.”
and
“This is just who I am.”
That difference matters.
Understanding a pattern does not erase responsibility.
And it does not require you to turn every part of yourself into a problem to solve.
You can understand why something makes sense without making it your identity.
Sometimes seeing the House more clearly gives you a way to hold yourself with more accuracy—and more room.
A Different Kind of Identity Work
What if knowing yourself means seeing more than the label?
The Living Room Method does not ask you to decide which Brain you “are.”
It does not turn a protective pattern into a personality type.
It asks what your House notices, what it has lived through, what it learned to expect, what it may Need, and what Heart can see with more of the story.
Identity can hold all of that without collapsing you into one reaction.
Your House has patterns. Your House has history. Neither one is the whole of you.
When Seeing Yourself Differently Opens More Questions
You don’t have to untangle your whole story by yourself.
Sometimes a new way of seeing yourself is enough to create room.
And sometimes it brings you closer to patterns, beliefs, or experiences you want help understanding.
Therapy can be a place to notice those patterns without reducing you to them, understand what your House has learned, and make more room for Care and Choice.
